Weber was still mystified about why Bridget Logan’s panties were on wrong, and he ran it by Parks and Coop, seeking their input.

Sitting behind the desk in his office, Parks said, “Come on, Jimmy, you were a bachelor for a long time. Are you telling me you never turned your skivvies inside out when you were out of fresh laundry and just needed to get through the day?”

“No, Parks, I never did. But thanks a lot for that mental picture.”

“I bet you never washed your underwear in the dishwasher and dried them in the microwave either, did you?”

“You’re a sick man, Parks.”

Coop, sitting with Weber across the FBI agent’s desk, said, “I guess if a woman was in a big enough hurry, she might do that. But I’d think it would be more likely they’d be inside out. Roberta, being blind, feels the seams on the side of her briefs when she’s folding them and can tell when they’re turned inside out.”

“All joking aside, three things come to mind,” Parks said.

“What’s that?”

“First of all, did she fold her underwear when she took it out of the laundry or was she one of those women that just threw everything in the laundry basket and grabbed something out when she needed it?”

“I’ve been to the house. It’s nice and tidy,” Weber said. “I don’t see her being the kind to do that.”

“Okay, second scenario. You said the autopsy said she’d had sex with somebody. Given where her car was found, did she meet somebody for a quickie and get dressed in the dark in a hurry for whatever reason?”

“That’s another possibility,” Weber said. “Everything I’ve heard about our victim says she’s not the kind to be fooling around on her husband, but we’ve all seen people we would never think would do something wrong do all kinds of disappointing things, haven’t we?”

The other two lawmen nodded their heads in agreement, and then Parks said, “That leads us to the third scenario, and I think it’s one that’s crossed your mind already, Jimmy, even if you haven’t said it. What if somebody else dressed her?”

That had been in the back of Weber’s mind, although he had not verbalized it.

“As much as I hate giving Parks credit for anything, he’s got a point there, Jimmy,” Coop said. “With all the insulin in her, and the ME saying she would be totally disoriented, what if someone took her out there to where we found her car, had sex with her if she was incapacitated and not able to resist, and then dressed her in a hurry before he left?”

“Then how did she wind up out on the highway getting hit by a truck?”

“You said there was no key fob with the car,” Parks reminded Weber. “Let’s say it happened like that, and she went stumbling around looking for help and wound up walking in front of Levi Bischoff’s truck.”

“This all seems pretty crazy to me,” Weber said. “I’m not saying it’s not possible, but it’s way out there.
